So, unsurprisingly, Halloween costume searches are trending on Google right now—and the search engine just released data for this year’s most popular queries. While the overall most searched costumes (including witch, pirate, and cowboy) are a bit more timeless, the search trends from the past week better reflect the media and pop culture moments that have captivated audiences in 2022. While Encanto technically released toward the end of 2021, its soundtrack especially has stuck around throughout the past year, and costumes from the movie have been a breakout search worldwide. Other searches surging in the past week include costumes from the Apple TV series Ted Lasso (which won an Emmy this year) and from Disney +’s Moon Knight and She Hulk. What’s interesting, however, is that many of the top trending costumes are references to cult-classic movies from the ’90s and early 2000s—not from 2022. For example, Pretty Woman and Kill Bill, (released in 1990 and 2003, respectively) both make the list, alongside searches for Ghostface, the trivia-loving killer from the 1996 movie franchise Scream, and Patrick Bateman, the protagonist villian of the 2000 film American Psycho. While the Scream franchise got a fifth installment in 2022, it’s less clear what inspired the renewed interest in these other movie character costumes. What we do know, though, is that revisiting some of your favorite throwback movies is a great way to get costume inspiration.
